Cardinals Solve Yankees, 5-3
|
The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees, 5-3, in Federal League action at Yankee Stadium, with St. Louis pitcher Scott Erickson named player of the game. Steve Chitren picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 1-2. Lee Smith was tagged with the loss. The Yankees fall to 10-19 and continue their lackluster start to the 1997 season.
In the top of the ninth inning of a 3-3 tie, St. Louis designated hitter Ivan Calderon hit a 2-run single. It broke the deadlock and put St. Louis on top, 5-3.
Calderon called the triumph "a good team win."
