Pirates Come Back Late to Clip Braves
|
Jose Valentin added some punch to the Pittsburgh offense, helping them outmuscle the Atlanta Braves, 9-7. In the game, Valentin, who was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1991 draft, went 1 for 2 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 3 times. Pittsburgh reliever Jeff Calhoun picked up the win, upping his record to 3-4. Mark Wohlers shouldered the loss. Bryan Harvey notched his 33rd save in 38 chances.
Pittsburgh used the clutch hitting of Charles Johnson to capture the win. The catcher drilled a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Pirates ahead, 8-7. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a big one.
"It was a nice win for our side today," said Pirates manager Stephen Ginter. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."
The Pirates sit in third place in the Federal League East Division with a record of 74-72.
