Senators Edge Tigers, 6-5
|
The Washington Senators overcame a good performance by Detroit first baseman Mark McGwire to knock off Detroit, 6-5, at Tiger Stadium. McGwire was 1 for 2 with a home run and 3 walks, while scoring 2 runs. Troy Percival was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 23 of 30 save opportunities. The Senators have an impressive 91-55 record.
A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 2nd and one out in the top of the seventh inning. That's when right fielder Vladimir Guerrero, who is tied for 5th in the UL in total bases with 297, reached on an error by the right fielder, driving in 1 run. The Senators went on to win.
"Winning is contagious," said Guerrero. "We're looking forward to the next game."
