The St. Louis Cardinals scored a 3-2 win versus the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium. St. Louis pitcher Scott Erickson nabbed top player honors in the tight contest. St. Louis reliever Mariano Rivera picked up the win, upping his record to 6-4. Jose Rijo absorbed the loss. The Cardinals now have a mark of 74-73.
The Cardinals got a clutch hit from Mike Benjamin with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Benjamin jumped on a 1-0 slider from Jose Rijo and hit a run-scoring double, staking his club to a 3-2 lead.
Erickson said the team appreciates the support from the fans. "I'm glad we could reward them with a good win," he said after the game.
