The San Diego Padres got a rather unremarkable outing from starting pitcher Sean Bergman, but it was good enough for the club to take a 6-5 decision over the New York Mets. The 4th-place Padres improved to 67-81.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when San Diego third baseman Jeff Frye, facing Willie Blair, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Padres the 6-5 win.

"We saved our best for last," said Frye.
