Athletics Slip Past Baltimore, 4-3
|
The Athletics had to overcome a good performance from Baltimore pitcher Dwight Gooden to claim a 4-3 win at Memorial Stadium. Gooden went 7 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Kirk Rueter picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 5-6. Russ Springer was tagged with the loss. The Athletics raised their record to 54-95.
The result might have been different for Oakland, had it not been for Benji Gil. The second baseman produced a run-scoring single in the top of the 13th inning to put the Athletics ahead, 4-3. For the game, Gil had 1 double and 1 single in 6 at-bats.
"We had a chance to win," said Baltimore manager Daniel Ward, "but we didn't get it done."
