Late Rally by Padres Secures Win
|
Spirited fans at RFK Stadium greeted the Washington Senators for their clash with the San Diego Padres.
The Padres had to overcome a fine effort from Washington pitcher Livan Hernandez to grab a narrow 5-4 win at RFK Stadium. Hernandez went 7 innings and allowed 1 earned run. San Diego reliever Calvin Schiraldi picked up the win, upping his record to 1-3. Todd Jones took the loss. Norm Charlton converted his 5th save in 5 tries.
San Diego left fielder Jose Canseco had a game-changing at-bat in the top of the eighth. On a fastball from Todd Jones, he launched a grand slam home run. It gave San Diego a 5-4 lead.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Canseco said.
At 68-82, San Diego is in 4th place in the United League West Division.
