Expos Top Padres in Extras
|
The San Diego Padres got a superb performance from pitcher Brian J. Anderson. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Montreal. The Expos won the game, 4-3. In spite of the loss, Anderson was named the player of the game. He threw 9 innings of 8-hit ball. Montreal reliever Dave Leiper was the winner. His record is now 6-2. Brian J. Anderson took the loss. Ken Howell notched his 37th save in 43 chances.
Gregg Jefferies drove in one run for Montreal. With no one out and the game tied in the top of the tenth inning, Jefferies, who finished 2nd in the UL in hits with 189 last year, had a clutch at-bat. Facing San Diego hurler Rob Murphy, he hit a sacrifice fly to give the Expos a 4-3 lead.
"Coulda, shoulda, woulda," said San Diego manager Chris Levin. "We had our chances and didn't cash in."
The first-place Expos, at 88-63, now lead their division by 5½ games.
