The Cubs had to overcome a good performance from Boston pitcher Eric Plunk to claim a 5-4 win at Fenway Park. Plunk went 6 innings and allowed 1 earned run. The win was Alberto Reyes's in relief. His record improves to 2-0. Roberto Hernandez took the loss for Boston. The Red Sox, at 9-21, have stumbled out of the gate.

The game was at a stalemate until pinch hitter Eric Karros came to bat in the top of the tenth. Facing Boston pitcher Mike Remlinger, he hit a 1-2 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 5-4.

"We didn't go down without a fight," said Boston manager Brett Williams.
