Red Sox Stun Reds, 3-2
|
The Cincinnati Reds got a superb performance from pitcher Jim Abbott. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Boston. The Red Sox won the game, 3-2. In spite of the loss, Abbott was named the player of the game. He threw 7 innings of shutout ball. Shinji Imanaka picked up the win, improving his season record to 13-7. He struck out 8 in 7 innings. Paul Assenmacher, credited with the save, is now 6 for 10 in save opportunities.
Runs were hard to come by in this one. Barry Bonds's at-bat with one out in the top of the eighth, therefore, was critical. The Boston left fielder hit a 3-run home run, to put his team on top, 3-2.
"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said Boston manager Brett Williams.
Boston is now 61-93, Cincinnati 90-63.
