The San Diego Padres did just enough to sneak past the Oakland Athletics, 4-3, at Jack Murphy Stadium. San Diego pitcher David Wells earned player of the game honors. The win takes San Diego to 2-2.

Had Randy Velarde not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Velarde hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Padres.

"Coulda, shoulda, woulda," said Oakland manager Jim B. "We had our chances and didn't cash in."
