Twins Edge Yankees, 2-1
|
The Twins had to overcome a fine performance from New York pitcher Jim Abbott to grab a 2-1 win at Yankee Stadium. Abbott allowed 1 earned run over 9 innings. Pedro Astacio got the win, improving to 3-3. He held the Yankees to 1 earned run on 6 hits over 7 innings, while striking out 5 and walking 1. The Yankees, now 11-19, continue their poor start.
Minnesota needed the clutch hitting of Frank Thomas to notch the win. The first baseman hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to put the Twins on top, 2-1. For the game, Thomas had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said Minnesota manager Darren Fischbach.
