Padres Edge Giants, 6-5
|
The San Diego Padres racked up a win at Candlestick Park, bumping off the San Francisco Giants, 6-5. Rod Nichols, who started for San Diego, pitched effectively for his team. San Diego reliever Shane Reynolds picked up the win, bumping his record to 3-2. Rusty Meacham was collared with the loss. Jeff Innis, credited with the save, is now 1 for 2 in save opportunities.
San Diego used the timely hitting of Mike Gallego to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a 2-run single in the top of the 14th inning to put the Padres on top, 6-3. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"We battled our tails off to get this win," said San Diego manager Chris Levin.
San Diego, now 58-95, holds last place in the United League West Division.
