Spirited fans at Riverfront Stadium greeted the Cincinnati Reds for their clash with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The St. Louis Cardinals topped the Cincinnati Reds, 9-3, in Federal League action at Riverfront Stadium. The player of the game was St. Louis pitcher and Brookline, Massachusetts native Joe Johnson. In 9 innings, Johnson surrendered 8 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 1. He allowed 3 runs.

Brent Mayne put St. Louis in front, 9-2, when he took Doug Henry downtown. His 3-run home run came with two out in the top of the eighth. It was his 1st home run of the season.

"We've got a great group of guys," Johnson said, "and we're having fun right now."

The win brings the Cardinals to 20-12, a promising start as the team looks to return to the playoffs.
