The Orlando Devil Rays topped the Cleveland Spiders, 8-4, in Federal League action at League Park. The player of the game was Orlando pitcher and Detroit, Michigan native John Smoltz. The Devil Rays bumped their record to 85-71 with this latest triumph.

The Devil Rays grabbed the lead in the top of the second. With no one out, Jeff Bagwell hit a 2-run home run off Steve Karsay, putting Orlando in front, 3-0. For Bagwell, it was his 31st home run of the season.

"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Smoltz.
