The Washington Senators had to overcome a big game from Montreal right fielder Gregg Jefferies to leave Olympic Stadium with a 9-5 victory. Jefferies was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Washington improves to 95-60 with the win. They lead their division by 4½ games.

Washington used the timely hitting of Fred McGriff to capture the win. The designated hitter stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning to put the Senators on top, 3-0. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but he made it count.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," McGriff said.
