Cardinals Subdue Chicago, 3-1
|
In a low-scoring tilt between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox, Terry Mulholland was the difference-maker. The St. Louis left-hander earned player of the game honors in the 3-1 win. Mulholland, now 15-9, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 5, walking 1, and allowing 1 earned run. Steve Chitren got the save, his 39th in 42 chances.
Matt Williams was 1 for 4, while adding 2 RBI for St. Louis. The former first round draft pick had a key at-bat in the top of the seventh. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Ken Hill. It was his 122nd RBI of the season.
"We made a couple of mistakes," said Chicago skipper Dustin Hafler, "and it cost us."
The Cardinals' win now puts them at 89-67.
