Reds Hold Off Devil Rays, 5-4
|
The Reds grabbed a win, 5-4, at Riverfront Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from Orlando pitcher Andy Benes. Benes went 6.2 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. Cincinnati reliever Brian Shouse was the winner. His record is now 3-2. The losing pitcher was Todd Worrell. Arthur Rhodes, credited with the save, is now 31 for 36 in save opportunities.
The Reds got an important contribution from left fielder Bernie Williams, who in the bottom of the seventh stroked a 2-2 fastball into center for a run-scoring single. It was his 152nd hit of the season and put the Reds ahead, 5-4.
"You get some opportunities, you better take advantage of them," said Orlando manager Ben Tennyson.
Cincinnati is now riding a 4-game win streak.
