The New York Mets faced a tough opponent in Detroit pitcher Marty Bystrom, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Tiger Stadium by a final score of 3-2. Bystrom went 8 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. New York now sits at 84-73, while Detroit falls to 73-84.

Tino Martinez was 1 for 3 for New York. The 26-year old first baseman had a key at-bat in the top of the fourth. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 0-0 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Marty Bystrom. It was his 90th RBI of the season.
