The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-3, in Federal League action at Three Rivers Stadium, with Cincinnati pitcher Kevin Gross named player of the game. Todd Worrell got the save, his 24th in 30 chances. Cincinnati has a 6-game win streak, while Pittsburgh has lost 9 in a row.
It could have been a different outcome for Cincinnati, had it not been for Dave Nilsson, the 24-year old first baseman . Nilsson contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the eighth inning to put Cincinnati up, 5-3.
"It's nice to come out on top today," said Gross.
