Florida right-hander Kevin Appier made an effective start against the Cincinnati Reds at Joe Robbie Stadium, leading his team to a 5-3 win. Florida, at 92-68, occupies second place in the Federal League East Division.

Edgardo Alfonzo changed the game with one swing of the bat. With two out in the bottom of the ninth, the Florida third baseman hammered a 3-run home run off Arthur Rhodes. It was his 22nd home run of the season. With it, Florida took the lead, 5-3.

"We fed off the energy of the crowd at the end," Alfonzo said.
