Devil Rays Topple Yankees with Late Rally
|
In a well-pitched game between the Orlando Devil Rays and the New York Yankees, pitcher John Smoltz was superb. The Orlando right-hander was named the player of the game in Orlando's 2-1 win. The Devil Rays bumped their record to 87-74 with this latest triumph.
When he came to bat in the bottom of the ninth, Phil Plantier had a chance to end it. New York pitcher Doug Simons had other ideas. But with one out, Plantier hit a sacrifice fly. The Devil Rays had the win.
"You've got to ride the highs and the lows in baseball in order to succeed," Plantier told the Orlando Bulletin. "Right now I'm feeling good, but that don't mean squat for tomorrow."
