The San Diego Padres got a magnificent performance from pitcher Mark Langston, who stifled the Arizona offense en route to a 1-0 Padres win at Bank One Ballpark. The winning pitcher was Langston, now 11-8. He tossed 6 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 2 and fanning 5. San Diego goes to 76-85, Arizona to 94-67.

San Diego used the timely hitting of Jeff Frye to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the sixth inning to put the Padres on top, 1-0. It was his only hit in 2 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"Against this team here, fangs out late in the game, it's nice to beat them," said San Diego skipper Matt Dodds.
