Chicago starter Mike Hampton put a stranglehold on the Boston offense. The left-hander had complete command of his fastball in leading the Cubs to a 3-1 win. Hampton got the win, improving to 3-2. He allowed 4 hits and walked 2 over 7.1 innings. Hampton allowed no earned runs. The Red Sox, at 9-22, have stumbled out of the gate.

Scott Cooper gave Chicago a good at-bat in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, he hit a run-scoring single to help send Chicago to the win.

"We put some tough at-bats on some tough pitches," said Chicago manager Anthony Perez.
