The New York Yankees defeated the Minnesota Twins, 6-5, in Federal League action at Yankee Stadium, with New York pitcher Mark Clark named player of the game. Earning his 1st save for New York was Andy Ashby. The Yankees are off to a tough start, getting just their 12th win in 31 games.

In the bottom of the fourth, New York first baseman Don Mattingly had a productive at-bat. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, Mattingly stroked a 2-run single to right. It made the score 6-0, New York. For the game, he was 2 for 4 with 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.
