Cubs Get Road Win, 5-3
|
The Chicago Cubs stopped the New York Yankees, 5-3, behind an impressive performance from Trot Nixon. The former first round draft pick made life miserable for New York pitching. He went 3-4 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Scott Garrelts picked up the win, improving his season record to 3-1. He struck out 5 in 5 innings. Frank DiPino earned the save, his 8th.
Nixon came through for Chicago with one out in the top of the sixth. With Chicago trailing 3-2, Nixon hit a 2-run home run. It was his 6th home run of the season and put the Cubs up, 4-3.
In postgame comments to the Chicago Daily, Nixon said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
The 5th-place Yankees have lost 4 consecutive games.
