The Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Kansas City Royals, 5-2, in Federal League action at Three Rivers Stadium. The player of the game was Pittsburgh pitcher Chris Nabholz. Nabholz went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 7 hits, walked 4, and struck out 5. His record improves to 5-0. Bryan Harvey was called on to finish, recording his 10th save.
Robin Ventura had a critical at-bat with no one out in the bottom of the second for Pittsburgh. He came through with a run-scoring double to put Pittsburgh in front, 2-0.
"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Pittsburgh skipper Stephen Ginter.
