Mets Sneak Past Senators, 6-5
The bad news for the Washington Senators: an opening day loss, 6-5, to the New York Mets at RFK Stadium. The good news: it was just game one in a long season. Earning player of the game honors was Sammy Sosa. He went 2 for 5 with 2 home runs and a walk, while scoring 3 times and driving in 4. Willie Blair, credited with the win, is now 1-0. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2.1 innings.

New York used the timely hitting of Dave Magadan to capture the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the 13th inning to put the Mets on top, 6-5. It was his only hit in 6 at-bats, but he made it count.

"Our team showed some gumption," said Sosa. "I like it."
