Pirates Win in Extras
|
Kansas City designated hitter Jim Thome had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Thome went 3 for 6 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 4, even as Pittsburgh beat the Royals, 11-10. Thome was named the player of the game despite the loss. Pittsburgh occupies 4th place in the Federal League East Division at 18-16.
The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Mark Whiten came to bat in the top of the 12th. Facing Kansas City pitcher Mike Schooler, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Pittsburgh on top, 11-10.
"Our team showed some spunk," said Whiten.
