Mets Shut Out Orioles
|
The Mets grabbed a win, 1-0, at Shea Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from Baltimore pitcher Steve Avery. Avery went 8 innings and allowed 1 earned run. Earning his 7th save for New York was Lee Smith. The Mets bumped their record to 20-16 with this latest triumph.
The Mets beat the Orioles with some clutch hitting. The home run by Gary Sheffield in the bottom of the first is a good example. With two down, Sheffield gave his team the lead, 1-0, when he came through with the big hit.
"I like the grit of this ballclub," Sheffield said.
