The Seattle Pilots and San Diego Padres cranked it up at Jack Murphy Stadium.
Seattle pitcher Alex Fernandez gave the Padres all they could handle, but in the end, San Diego left Jack Murphy Stadium with a 5-3 win. Fernandez allowed no earned runs on 3 hits over 7 innings. Steve Howe picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-2. Darren Holmes was tagged with the loss.
With a runner on 1st and one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, first baseman Troy Neel delivered big for the Padres. San Diego was trailing 3-1 when he belted a 2-run home run.
"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Neel said.
The Padres, now 20-18, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.
