Mets Topple Pilots with Late Rally
|
Seattle got a terrific performance from pitcher Todd Van Poppel, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Mets. New York won the Shea Stadium contest, 3-2. Van Poppel was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of shutout ball. New York, at 4-0, has sizzled in the early going.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when New York left fielder Cliff Floyd, facing Darren Holmes, had a run-scoring ground out. It gave the Mets the 3-2 win.
"I felt we were ready to go," said New York manager Michael Kritikos. "Our pregame was pretty good."
