Tigers Solve Orioles, 4-3
|
Detroit Tigers starter Marty Bystrom was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Baltimore Orioles, 4-3. Bystrom went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 8 hits, walked 1, and struck out 6. His record improves to 2-4. Candy Sierra recorded the save for Detroit, his 1st of the season.
Had Tony Fernandez not delivered a key base hit in the top of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Fernandez hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Tigers.
"We'll savor this win," Fernandez told the Detroit Observer, "then get ready for the next game."
Detroit is now 16-25, Baltimore 13-28.
