Chicago beat Boston at Wrigley Field, eking out a 2-1 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Mike Hampton, who earned player of the game honors. The save went to Frank DiPino, his 12th this season. Boston has now lost 5 in a row.

Had Derek Bell not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Bell hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Cubs.

"It's a mindset," said Hampton. "Just trying to do your job, trying to be consistent."
