Fans at Riverfront Stadium got more than they bargained for.

In a low-scoring tilt between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds, Bill C. Swift was the difference-maker. The St. Louis right-hander earned player of the game honors in the 3-2 win. St. Louis reliever Steve Chitren got the win, raising his record to 3-0. Arthur Rhodes was tagged with the loss.

The Cardinals got an important contribution from pinch hitter John Valentin, who in the top of the tenth hit a 2-1 fastball into left for a solo home run. It was his 11th home run of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 3-2.

"Honestly, I'm not frustrated," said Cincinnati manager Eric Deutsch. "The effort was great."

The Cardinals bumped their record to 29-17 with this latest triumph.
