With first baseman Richie Sexson leading the charge, the Florida Marlins defeated the Kansas City Royals, 7-3, at Royals Stadium. Sexson, who is on pace to hit 78 home runs this season, belted 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Wilson Alvarez picked up the win, improving his season record to 3-1. He struck out 8 in 7.1 innings. Getting the save was Bryan Harvey, his 15th.

In the top of the first, Sexson pounced on a 2-1 fastball from Steve Woodard and hit a 2-run home run. It put Florida on top, 2-0.

"We'll pop the top on a cold one and get back to work tomorrow," Sexson said.

Florida is now 31-19, 3½ games up in the Federal League East Division.
