Athletics Win in Extras
|
The Oakland Athletics defeated the Baltimore Orioles, 8-5, in United League action at Memorial Stadium. George Bell received player of the game honors. The 13-year veteran was 2 for 5 with 2 home runs, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4. The win was Bryn Smith's in relief. His record improves to 3-1. Tom Urbani took the loss for Baltimore. Jay Howell earned the save for Oakland, his 14th of the year.
Late-game drama came in the top of the tenth inning. With no one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, the batter, Tim Teufel, hit a run-scoring single. It helped Oakland seize the win.
"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Teufel.
The Orioles, at 26-25, have lost 5 straight games.
