The Toronto Blue Jays topped the Oakland Athletics, 5-3, in United League action at Oakland Coliseum. The player of the game was Toronto pitcher John Smiley. Toronto reliever German Jimenez picked up the win to move to 4-4. Joel Johnston suffered the loss. Steve Shirley earned the save, his 6th.

Toronto took a 5-2 lead on Dean Palmer's 13th home run of the season. The 3-run home run, which Palmer hit in the top of the seventh, left Oakland pitcher Joel Johnston visibly frustrated.

"It was a good effort all around," said Palmer.

The 'W' lifts Toronto's record to 26-24.
