Multi-HR Day for McGwire as Tigers Overpower Rockies, 9-4
The Detroit Tigers beat the Colorado Rockies, 9-4, at Mile High Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of first baseman Mark McGwire, who captured player of the game honors. He hit 3 home runs, while scoring 4 runs and driving in 5. The Tigers, now 19-31, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.

There was more than one reason the Tigers beat the Rockies, but McGwire's big at-bat in the top of the first was an important factor. He staked his team to a 2-0 lead when he hit a 2-run home run.

"The boys were really swinging the bats today," winning manager Julio Izquierdo said.
