Baltimore pitcher Dwight Gooden gave the Padres all they could handle, but in the end, San Diego left Jack Murphy Stadium with a 4-2 win. Gooden allowed no earned runs on 1 hit over 7 innings. Robb Nen earned the save for San Diego, his 8th. The Padres, now 18-32, know that wins in May count the same as wins in September.
Also pitching in for San Diego was catcher Ed Taubensee, who hammered a grand slam home run in the bottom of the first. For the game, Taubensee went 1 for 3 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Taubensee told a San Diego Today reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."
