Great Effort by Mets RF Sosa Not Enough in 12-8 Loss
Sammy Sosa did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the New York Mets from losing, 12-8, to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Bank One Ballpark. Sosa hit 2 home runs. He scored 3 times and drove in 3. Marvin Freeman, credited with the win, is now 5-1. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 3 innings. Danny Patterson converted his 14th save in 16 tries.

An important at-bat for the Diamondbacks came in the bottom of the seventh, when second baseman Delino DeShields stroked a 2-run single. That made the score 10-7 in favor of Arizona. For the day, DeShields was 1 for 4 with a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.

"We came out aggressive," said Diamondbacks manager Alen Maglajac. "We came out swinging the bats."

Arizona is now 30-25, while New York is 29-25.
