The New York Mets powered past the San Diego Padres, 11-6, at Jack Murphy Stadium. Tino Martinez went 4 for 5 with 4 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once, to lead the charge. New York now owns a record of 24-30.

New York used a well-timed hit by Harold Baines to capture the win. The right fielder socked a 2-run double in the top of the second inning to put the Mets ahead, 2-0. Though it was his only hit in 5 at-bats, it was important.

"It was a solid team effort and we'll try to keep this momentum going," Baines told reporters after the game.
