Giants Walk Off with 3-2 Win
|
Detroit got a terrific performance from pitcher Jim Neidlinger, but it wasn't enough to beat the San Francisco Giants. San Francisco won the Candlestick Park contest, 3-2. Neidlinger was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 8 innings of 6-hit ball. Detroit, at 21-32, has lost 4 straight.
Carmelo Martinez was 1 for 3 with a walk for San Francisco. In a tie game with two out in the bottom of the ninth, Martinez came through with a run-scoring single. It put the Giants in front, 3-2.
Martinez said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
