The Washington Senators scored a 5-4 win versus the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Washington pitcher Erik Hanson nabbed top player honors in the tight contest. The Senators sit in 4th place in the United League East Division with a record of 26-28.

The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Al L. Martin came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing New York pitcher Darren Dreifort, he hit a 1-2 fastball for a solo home run. It was a game-changer, putting Washington on top, 5-4.

"Erik was throwing free and easy," said Washington manager Alexander Cumana.
