Yankees Sneak Past Cubs, 5-4
|
The New York Yankees did just enough to secure a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Nobody did more than pitcher Greg Hibbard, who captured player of the game honors. Mike Henneman closed the door for New York, picking up his 1st save of the year. The Yankees have stumbled out of the gate, getting only their 1st win in 5 games.
Phil B. Clark had a big 2-run single for the Yankees in the top of the eighth inning. With New York trailing 4-3 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a forkball from Randy Tomlin and stroked the single to center. It was his 2nd hit of the season, and more importantly, it put the Yankees ahead, 5-4.
"Winning the game is always the first objective," Clark said.
