Multi-HR Day for Jordan as Devil Rays Overpower Spiders, 11-7
|
The Orlando Devil Rays defeated the Cleveland Spiders, 11-7, at League Park. Orlando center fielder Brian Jordan was named player of the game for his superb performance. He hit 2 home runs. He scored 3 runs and drove in 3. Orlando reliever Rich Garces picked up the win to move to 1-0. Willie Banks suffered the loss. Cleveland has now lost 4 in a row.
It could have been a different outcome for Orlando, had it not been for Paul O'Neill, the 11-year veteran . O'Neill contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to put Orlando up, 8-7.
O'Neill said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
