The Oakland Athletics got a magnificent performance from pitcher John Mitchell, who muffled the San Diego offense en route to a tight 2-1 Athletics win at Oakland Coliseum. Even with the win, the Athletics have a dismal 18-37 record.

The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Mark McLemore came to bat in the bottom of the 13th. Facing San Diego pitcher Ramon Pena, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Oakland on top, 2-1.

"The game of baseball will test you," said Jim B, the Oakland skipper. "This one tested us."
