Cardinals Need Extras to Top White Sox
|
St. Louis starter Terry Mulholland pitched effectively against the Chicago White Sox at Busch Stadium. The left-hander led his team to a 3-2 win. St. Louis reliever Mariano Rivera picked up the win, upping his record to 4-2. Bruce Ruffin absorbed the loss. St. Louis has now won 3 straight, while the White Sox have lost 3 in a row.
Matt Williams, who finished 5th in the FL in wins above replacement with 6.6 in 1989, chipped in for St. Louis with a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th. For the game, the third baseman had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 1 RBI.
"We've got a great group of guys," Williams said, "and we're having fun right now."
