Senators Get One-Run Win at New York
|
New York got a terrific game from shortstop Gary Sheffield. It wasn't enough, though, to prevent the team from falling to Washington, 5-4. Sheffield was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 2 runs. Andy Pettitte earned the win for Washington. He lasted 6.2 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 5 hits, while striking out 6. With the win, he raised his record to 3-7. Troy Percival was called on to finish, recording his 14th save.
Eric Davis's at-bat in the top of the seventh was significant, coming with a runner on 2nd and the game tied, 3-3. The Washington center fielder hit a run-scoring double off Jim Bullinger to put the Senators up.
"Enjoyed this one," Davis told the Washington Herald. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
The Mets, now 29-28, have lost 4 in a row.
