The San Diego Padres picked up a win at Jack Murphy Stadium, knocking off the Oakland Athletics, 5-3. Starting pitcher Ismael Valdez, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason why. Valdez picked up the win for San Diego, going 7.1 innings. He gave up 3 runs on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 6-6. With the win, San Diego goes to 21-34, while the Athletics fall to 23-33.

Jim Edmonds put San Diego in front, 5-3, when he took John Mitchell downtown. His solo home run came with two out in the bottom of the sixth. It was his 5th home run of the season.
