Late Rally by Padres Secures Win
|
The San Diego Padres topped the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, in United League action at Jack Murphy Stadium. The player of the game was San Diego pitcher Mark Langston. Wes Gardner, credited with the win, is now 4-2. He allowed no runs on no hits in 2 innings. The win puts the Padres at 27-34, while the Dodgers drop to 31-28.
Had Randy Velarde not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Velarde hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Padres.
"Enjoyed this one," Velarde told the San Diego Observer. "But it's back to work tomorrow."
