The Oakland Athletics beat the San Diego Padres, 6-4, at Jack Murphy Stadium. The Athletics got a fine performance from catcher Nobuyuki Kagawa, who captured player of the game honors. He hit 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Oakland reliever Curt Brown picked up the win, upping his record to 2-0. Jeff Innis shouldered the loss. Jay Howell was called on to finish, recording his 20th save.
The contest featured some late-game dramatics from Oakland catcher Nobuyuki Kagawa. In the top of the ninth inning, with two out and a runner on 1st, Kagawa hit a 2-run home run to help Oakland seize the win.
"This is a very good team," said Kagawa. "We have the chance to do something special."
The Athletics have an impressive 36-23 record.
